Nourishing Through The Food Hub

Discover how the South Vancouver  Food Hub is transforming lives through these four unique stories — from easing medical stress for seniors to supporting students through tough times

Sherry & Hassan

Sherry & Hassan are both retired. They are getting by but have medical bills. With no insurance, dental procedures and medications can be costly. Participating in this program has alleviated their stress and helps them to meet some of their dietary needs. It enables them to direct money that would have been spent on food towards medical expenses. They also appreciate other programming that is offered when other community groups drop by.

Sherry hopes that future generations, her family and grandchildren do well and that they continue to stay strong and healthy.

Billie

Billie was a student when she first came to our Food Hub in 2021. She was experiencing a number of challenges both internally and externally. She had lost her savings, wasn't working and her living arrangement was not ideal. With no financial means she was only able to eat once every three days. Through the Food Hub's support, she was able to continue with her studies.

Fortunately, Billie's situation has improved, and she no longer needs assistance. She found a job and discovered her vocation as a writer. Having overcome adversity, she developed an appreciation and saw her inner strength. She currently is a student and writes "stories about broken people who need to be recognized" and hopes to help them in her own way.

Maria

Maria first started attending our program at the beginning of Covid. At that time, she had been in several accidents and was taking time to recover. The disability benefits she received are just enough to pay for rent and other bills. She is very grateful as this program enables her to budget, buy other essential items and to always have food on hand.

Not only is Maria a participant, but she is also an invaluable volunteer who enjoys the comradery and teamwork environment at the Food Hub. She likes to share dishes she prepares from the food she receives with other Food Hub volunteers and staff.

She would like to find a part time job and hopes to be active in the community locally and abroad. She is interested in advocacy and community engagement and wants to use her experience to help others in similar situations.

Ms. S

Ms. S and her family have experienced multiple barriers related to health, income and housing.  She has often shared her personal struggles and experiences of isolation. She is a single parent who cares and provides for her adult child and elderly parent. Over the last 2 years she has come to see us as family and comments that she feels welcomed and happy whenever she picks up her weekly food box.

Through her involvement in our food program, we have been able to connect her with other needed resources and support. She has also been able to enroll her mom in several seniors' programs offered through our agency and Sunset Community Centre. She disclosed that prior to that her mother had been isolated for the last 19 years as she didn't speak any English. She now attends weekly programs several times a week and is eager to get to one of those programs after distribution.  Her son has also volunteered at our distribution program and community events.
