The Association of Neighbourhood Houses of BC (ANHBC) builds healthy and engaged neighbourhoods by connecting people and strengthening their capacity to create change.
ANHBC is the network of eight neighbourhood houses and an outdoor centre, through which we operate more than 500 community-based programs and services for a diversity of participants. Together with community, we build strong and supportive relationships at welcoming and inclusive sites throughout Metro Vancouver.
``Neighbourhood House has touched our lives since the pandemic started. They have contributed amazing experiences for my daughter. She saw from that experience that the world is a good place she can trust and that there are many caring people who love you and care for you.``
- Reena, participant
Neighbourhood Houses bring people together to build and strengthen their communities, which means that every neighbourhood house is different, reflecting and responding to the needs of the community in which it is located. Neighbourhood houses approach everything in a holistic way, dealing with the whole person, the whole family, the whole neighbourhood and the whole community. It isn’t about providing a program or service to address a specific need, but instead, offering tools, knowledge and practical supports that enable individuals to do for themselves, to improve their quality of life and in some cases, to take on leadership roles in their community. Neighbourhood houses recognize that as individuals, we all grow when we have an opportunity to give as well as receive. ``It was very welcoming. That’s what is so important about neighbourhood houses – the welcome – no matter who are you are, or where you are coming from.``
